Nowadays, it's hard to justify renting a car when rates are on the rise. With other cheaper options like public transportation (subways, buses) and cabs, many travelers are forgoing the convenience of renting and instead calling a cab or buying a subway pass.

Companies like Enterprise have reported higher rates compared to last year (February 2013 is showing rates up 4 percent from February 2012). And, many travelers are saying that add-ons like random taxes and fees are turning them off from going the rental route. But, there are ways to save when booking a rental car; here's how:

Bring your own accessories: Don't upgrade to get a GPS tracking system if you have a smartphone. You can easily use Google Maps to get you where you need to go.

Don't go all-in with gas: Do the math and calculate how much you'll be using for gas. If it doesn't make sense to buy their pre-paid cost, don't do it. Oftentimes you'll save a ton of money by not getting the gas included.

Consider a flight-rental package: The combo can save you a ton of money if you do your research and price out the options.

Look for deals: ShermansTravel.com will often have well-below-market rental car deals, so always check with us first!
