Inside the Artist Loft on Oceania Marina

by  Kristen Boatright | Dec 17, 2016

If you’re ready to try your hand at recreating an impressionist masterpiece — or you simply want learn how to draw more than a stick figure — consider taking a lesson in the Artist Loft on an Oceania Cruises ship.

Classes in the Artist Loft are taught by an artist-in-residence, for hands-on instruction in mediums such as drawing, painting, and photography. The complimentary classes are social and fun. And, they’re popular; get there early as they can fill up fast.

Each runs about 90 minutes, and multiple classes are held each sailing. The artist-in-residence plans out the lessons, often tailoring the subject and medium to the itinerary. For example, we tried (key word: tried) a watercolor Cézanne painting during an impressionist class in the Mediterranean on Oceania Marina. Other Mediterranean-inspired classes included Venetian mask painting and a pencil drawing instruction on Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. In the South Pacific, lessons might focus on painting or drawing animals found in the tropics.

Our take: it’s an enjoyable way to pass an afternoon at sea while picking up some new creative skills. And guests shouldn't be intimidated as the classes can accommodate artists of any skill level.

The Artist Loft is on both Oceania Marina and Oceania Riviera, and a smaller space is used for art classes on the Oceania Insignia world cruise. The artists also sell their work while they are on board.
