Here’s a quick look at what’s new this week in cruising, and how it could impact your next trip…

    • Melissa Etheridge is heading to sea with Royal Caribbean International, headlining the Melissa Etheridge & Friends Rock the Boat cruise, October 31 to November 5. In a video the rocker is seen "building" a boat, and says she looks forward to "music, fun, talk" with fans. "I'm going to be trapped on a boat with you for five days; it's going to be fabulous," she says smiling. Also onboard, performing and mingling will be Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, along with other acts. The cruise is on the Brilliance of the Seas, sailing from Tampa to Key West and Cozumel.
      Fares from $1,099 per person.
    • Look for such signature Princess Cruises features as a giant Movies Under the Stars screen and a soaring Piazza atrium on a new 3,560-passenger ship that will join the fleet by 2020. The newbie will be similar to sisters Royal Princess and Regal Princess, but will also introduce "brand-new innovations" to be announced in the future. The new-build is part of a deal between Carnival Corp. and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri that will also bring two Costa Cruises Asia ships destined for China and a P&O Australia ship for "Down Under."
    • Calorie counters, say bye-bye to Devinly Decadence on Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas. Created by "Biggest Loser" chef Devin Alexander, the restaurant's menu items were all 500 calories or less, and the imitation "Big Mac" was actually very tasty. Alexander tells that dropping the menu had to do with other commitments (so don't assume cruisers don't eat healthy). The replacement is called Solarium Bistro.
