With so many talented singers, actors, and writers congregating in New York City, odds are good you'll rub elbows with a celebrity or star-in-the-making during your stay. However, why not increase your odds by attending these haute happenings at two of the city's finest hotels?
The Paramount Hotel is capitalizing on its prime location at Times Square and Broadway with a series of happy hours with Broadway cast members in the hotel’s Paramount Bar. Throughout 2012, on the second Tuesday of every month (next event May 8) the party features actors from the musical adaptation of Ghost, while the last Thursday of the month (starting May 31) it’s the cast of One Man, Two Guvnors. Later this year, join Matthew Broderick and the rest of the cast from Nice Work If You Can Get It (stay tuned for details).
Bartenders have created specialty cocktails for each of the current shows: a mixture of coconut rum, pineapple juice, and blue curacao for Ghost, and a Pimms Cup with Pimms, lemon juice, simple syrup, club soda, and fresh fruit for One Man, Two Guvnors. The featured drinks cost a reasonable $7, but if you attend the show on the day of the event bring your ticket stub for 10 percent off your bar tab. Best of all, you don’t need to be a guest of the hotel to attend the party. The happy hours run from 10:30pm to 12:30am.
A few avenues over, the New York Palace hosts monthly meet-and-greets with best-selling authors, appropriately held in the hotel’s Library Room. Events include a reading from the featured author’s new work as well as book signings (attendees are encouraged, but not required, to purchase the book at the event). The hotel even provides free wine and hors d’oeuvres. Next up will be Beth Gutcheon and her new book, Gossip, taking place tomorrow, April 17 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. And mark your calendars now for Marcia Clark’s reading from Guilt by Degrees on May 7.
