After a few delays, Fashion 26 – a new fashion-inspired Wyndham property in New York’s Garment District – opened April 13. I recently stopped by the hotel to see just how stylish it really is.

First off, Fashion 26 is set back from the street slightly allowing the building to have a working driveway, somewhat of a rarity in NYC. The sleek lobby includes small touches from the fashion world. The front desk resembles a cutting room table, while the artwork above it is made from 1,632 spools of thread. The overall vibe draws from classic American style like Ralph Lauren. One quirky program sure to encourage guests to look their most fashionable: each day the person deemed to be the Best Dressed Guest is featured on the Fashion 26 blog – and receives a free upgrade for the night!

Of the hotel’s 280 rooms just 150 are open right now. Room décor is based on men’s suits – an inspiration more obvious in the pinstripe carpets and dark-toned furniture than the polka dot wallpaper. Still, it’s hard to argue with the Frette linens and towels and Gilchrist and Soames bath amenities. Tech-savvy guests will appreciate the free Wi-Fi (also a rarity in New York), iHome docking stations, and giant flat-screen TVs. At 275 square feet, standard rooms are decent sized but not huge. Unfortunately views are less than spectacular for many rooms (the neighboring office building is just a few feet away).

One place you will find great views is Rare View, Fashion 26’s rooftop bar set to open in late May. The bar/lounge will eventually be a year-round space with a retractable roof. Rare View is an offshoot of RARE, the sweeping two-story restaurant on the hotel’s sub-lobby level. The high-end burger joint also has a location in the Affinia Shelburne Hotel in Murray Hill.

The location of Fashion 26 isn’t terribly fabulous, though it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to Herald Square (home to Macy’s and a few major subway lines), and Chelsea and the Meatpacking District aren’t far away. Once the hotel is fully open, it should live up to its style potential.

Special opening rates start at $299/night; www.f26nyc.com.
