Athletes won’t be the only ones competing in London next summer: The race to build a new cruise ship terminal in time for the 2012 Olympic Games kicked off with the Mayor of London’s approval this past Monday. The construction, set to unfold in Greenwich’s Enderby Wharf, will include a complex incorporating 770 new homes, a 251-room hotel, and a public square with gardens (though it’ll be a few more years beyond the completion of the terminal itself in 2012 for many of those extras to manifest). Twenty miles deeper into London than the current out-of-town cruise terminal at Tilbury, Enderby Wharf will provide greater access to Central London’s attractions. The project is set to “significantly increase the number of cruise passengers visiting London who will be within a few minutes’ walk of Maritime Greenwich,” according to James Blakely from Mason Development Ltd., the company behind the operation.
