Fresh off New York Fashion Week, Fashion Designer Nanette Lepore is likely heading for a Miami Vacation with daughter Violet.
But, in any case -- whether heading south, or abroad for work or play -- Nanette loves to pack. Just ask her husband.
In an exclusive interview, the New York-based apparel maven told us about the importance of bringing a sweater, wherever you go. She also discussed the inspiration for her latest collection -- and guess what? It involves two amazing travel destinations.
Q: What are three carry-on items you cannot fly without?
A: A substantial stack of fashion magazines, hand cream to beat the dry air, and a luxe pair of cashmere sweatpants.
Q: Do you have a specific packing strategy?
A: I love to shop while I’m traveling, so I always pack a foldable nylon duffel for the return. In addition to that, I always pack for an unexpected night. You never know who might invite you to a gala.
Q: What are some clothing items or fashion accessories women should always travel with?
A: Bring sweaters! No matter the season, I always regret not having the back up on AC-drenched planes or a breezy seaside evening.
Q: Does packing usually involve planning or is it a last-minute thing?
A: I love to pack. It’s so much fun to plan my outfits and rediscover pieces in my closet. It’s definitely something I dedicate a bit of time to.
Q: Are you a light or heavy packer?
A: My husband is convinced I’m the heaviest packer on any flight I’m on. I probably wouldn’t disagree.
Q: Is this season's collection inspired by a specific destination?
A: By two. My love of travel started on family road trips to California in the 60s. I was in love with the energy and spirit of the place -- not to mention the piercing blues of the Pacific. This season I wanted to harness that energy and juxtapose it with the feminine elegance of the south of France. It’s Bardot meets surfer rock.
