If baseball doesn’t float your boat, check out a World Series competition that just might: the America’s Cup World Series, a world-class regatta that makes its third stop in San Diego from November 12 to 20.
The third stop of the series that began in Portugal in August, the event will provide an opportunity for sailing enthusiasts and landlubbers alike to watch the world’s top sailors in action. They’ll take the helm of the sleek, AC-45 and AC-72 wing-sailed catamarans, dubbed the world’s fastest boats, on a thrilling route right through San Diego Bay, with multiple waterfront viewing locations that allow spectators to see the on-the-water action up close.
This is the first time the high-tech boats will be raced in the United States, and the only U.S. stop on this year’s competition. Fortunately, deals are flowing in a number of hotels in the city. Jump on them now, before they sail away.
At the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, $159 (plus tax) will get you a bay-facing room, a bottle of vino, and a cheese platter. As of the publishing of this post, there was still availability on the second weekend of the event, as well as on some weekdays.
Another option: Hotel San Diego Resort & Spa has availability for rooms for $149, plus tax. The hotel is convenient to not only the World Series regatta, but also the San Diego airport (just six miles away), making it a perfect destination for a quick weekend away.
While you’re in town, be sure to check out the Broadway Pier and the U.S.S. Midway, with spectator grandstands, interactive displays, concession booths and entertainment scheduled every night. If you want to rub elbows with the upscale nautical types, you can win four tickets to the VIP Experience – you just need to fill a quick online survey.
