Seabourn Partners with Tony Winner for New Show

by  Danielle Contray | Sep 22, 2016

Luxury cruise line Seabourn has partnered with Tony, Oscar, and Grammy winner Tim Rice — best known for his work on "Evita," "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat," and "The Lion King" — for an all new show. This concert-style production will tell the story behind Rice's most classic songs, which might include anything from "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" to "Hakuna Matata." "An Evening with Tim Rice" will also include narration by Rice, and there also will be photos from Rice's collection broadcast on screens around the stage. The show will premiere on Seabourn Encore during its maiden voyage from Singapore in January 2017. The show will be on all of Seabourn's vessels by the end of 2017, and will also be performed on Seabourn Ovation when it launches in spring 2018.

Cruise lines have increasingly been working with big names to bring the best of Broadway and the West End to sea. Princess partnered with Stephen Schwartz for the show "Magic to Do," which includes songs from the composer's musicals such as "Pippin" and "Wicked." This fall, the line will also debut "Born to Dance," which will include music from shows such as "Chicago" and "West Side Story." Other lines are increasingly staging elaborate and impressively high-quality Broadway productions, including "Grease" on Royal Caribbean's new Harmony of the Seas and the Tony-nominated Cotton Club revue "After Midnight" on Norwegian Escape.
