New York City has no shortage of hotel rooms; there are over 100,000. But finding a room that feels both personal and spacious is no small feat. Enter: The Kimberly Hotel. If you want to feel like a local in New York City, book a stay here. The property was originally built to be apartments, but the owner had a change of heart at the last minute and decided instead to open a hotel. Rooms here are seriously spacious, and the suites feel like an apartment with a kitchen area with a mini fridge and dishware. But possibly the best perk? All but 10 of the 154 suites offer a balcony with incredible views of the city skyline. Here's our review...

What You Need to Know

It's All in the Details

The Look of The Kimberly Hotel

The hotel rises above the city sidewalks, and guests enter a lobby area (which is particularly lovely during the holiday season). A rather interesting feature is the 23,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, filled with tropical fish. The spaces feel grand, but personal with a concierge and friendly check-in. There are two on-site restaurants (in addition to a lounge) that encapsulate so much of what NYC is known for: Empire Steakhouse, a classic New York City steakhouse that even locals appreciate for a special occasion (they have over 100 varieties of single-malt scotch); Bistango is where you'll want to go for incredible handmade pasta and lovely Italian wines; and Upstairs at The Kimberly, which is fantastic for pre- or post-dinner drinks with a view. The property has a small but very well-equipped gym and room service.

The Vibe at The Kimberly Hotel

One of the few hotels in the city where you'll spot locals, the rooftop lounge, appropriately called Upstairs at The Kimberly, is an almost-hidden gem to sip craft cocktails with pinch-me views of the city. You'll find all sorts of travelers here -- from families to couples -- mainly because the property offers so much extra space. The (almost) all-suite hotel has a sliding glass door that opens to a balcony with sitting areas: a serious rarity in New York City.

The hotel's location (on 50th between 3rd Avenue and Lexington) makes this an ideal location for business travelers, shoppers, and those who want to see New York's most famous landmarks. Come dinner, expect to see chic patrons in the steakhouse or sipping wine outside at Bistango. Well-heel travelers will appreciate the L'Occitane bath amenities and Fretté linens.

Who Will Love The Kimberly Hotel

Anyone looking for a bit more space (without sacrificing style) who still wants to be in the middle of NYC's action. The Kimberly also features two duplex suites with spiral staircases located in the Townhouse section of the hotel. There's a one-bedroom suite with two bathrooms and a two-bedroom suite with two bathrooms, both have kitchenettes and separate living and dining areas. Another rarity for New York City hotel rooms – windows that actually open.

Who Might Not Love The Kimberly Hotel

While it's nearly impossible to get bored in New York City, young children might not find much entertainment within the hotel (not counting that aquarium).

Best Amenity at The Kimberly Hotel

There are a few: The Kimberly Hotel has become almost famous for its feather beds, draped in Fretté linens and dressed with fluffy down comforters and pillows. The rooms here are some of the largest in New York City, with balconies. But, Upstairs at The Kimberly takes top bill: The views are incredible, with a close-up look at the Chrysler Building that shines brightly in the backdrop.
