Now that the crowds from the World Cup have subsided, travel deals are starting to spring up in South Africa and flights to Johannesburg from Washington, D.C. and New York are selling for $989 round-trip – down several hundred dollars from flights in July. We found final rates from the East Coast (with all taxes and fees) from as low as $1,130. Flights from West Coast cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles are also reduced to $1,114 (before taxes), or around $1,400. Other destinations, including Cape Town, Durban, East London, and Port Elizabeth are also on sale starting from $1,049. Travel is valid from September 30 through December 9, but tickets must be purchased by August 20.
THE VALUE: These off-season rates are an average of $300 less than peak-season fares (depending on route).
THE CATCH: October through February is summer in South Africa. Temps in Johannesburg range from 60 to 80 degrees, and expect frequent thunderstorms (that tend to pass by quickly).
