New Yorkers rejoice! America's aviation sweetheart – low-cost, “freedom from fees” Southwest Airlines – has just revealed it’ll be touching down in the Big Apple this summer. Starting June 28, the Dallas-based carrier has scheduled operations for several daily flights between LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Chicago Midway (MDW) and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. (BWI). Introductory rates are priced from as little as $49 each-way (read more about the deal details in our Editor Review).

Direct or connecting service will additionally be available to/from more than 45 US destinations, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and more. While the airline has had a presence at Long Island’s MacArthur Airport (ISP) since '99, the hour-long drive between it and the New York City metro area made it a less-than-practical option. We're expecting the LaGuardia routes to be a thundering success – and won't be surprised in the least to see a handful of route expansions crop up before the year's end.
