In many ways, smartphones have created a work environment where employees have a tough time completely disconnecting. But in many other ways, these connected products have made our lives far easier, and far more organized. One of the longstanding dreads for those who routinely travel for business is the art of filing expenses. Thankfully, I've got a few recommended apps that can make the process far easier.
Concur: Many corporate entities rely on Concur
to manage expenses and travel, and if your company is one of those, there's no better app to grab. It's available for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry devices, and allows you to add expenses on the go as you incur them. Just finished dinner? Use your smartphone camera to snap a photo of the receipt, upload it within the Concur app, punch in the details (location, date, cost, etc.) and save it. Just like that, you've added another line item to your ongoing list. Simple!
iXpenseIt: For freelancers and those who work for a company that doesn't have a specific booking tool, this is a great option. At $4.99 (plus a few more bucks here and there for optional advanced features within the app), it's one of the most fully-featured expensing programs on the market. You can print reports wirelessly, capture receipts using the built-in camera, create PDF exports of trip logs, and view charts of how much is being spent where. As an added bonus, this app includes a budgeting feature.
Live Expenses: If you're just looking for a free, unaffiliated option, this is the one to get. It's basic enough to be given away, but robust enough to include support for photographed receipts, a variety of languages, various currencies, and the ability to export trip reports as HTML or CSV for viewing in Office. (For Android users, try Expense Manager.)
