After 10 years in business, Boston’s acclaimed boutique hotel XV Beacon hasn’t stopped turning heads. I recently enjoyed a scrumptious lunch at the property’s upscale steakhouse Mooo…. and was blown away by the three-course prix fixe menu for $20.09, now a permanent fixture thanks to its success during restaurant week. The discount price definitely does not translate to smaller portions. To get the most of the bargain, I recommend the steamed mussels and chorizo appetizer, 12-ounce New York sirloin with truffle fries, and the lemon pound cake (just enough dessert after two filling courses).
During my visit, I also had a chance to check out some of the upgrades XV Beacon rolled out for its 10th anniversary. Each of the 60 rooms now features 42” flatscreen TVs and new furniture and linens. There are also two new Lexus courtesy cars to chauffeur guests anywhere they want to go. And the anniversary celebration doesn’t stop there – the hotel is offering a few deals to keep the spirit going through 2010.
The 10th Anniversary Package includes an automatic room upgrade and a “remembrance gift” of either an engraved luggage tag or champagne top. Guests can then choose from one of 10 extras, such as a bottle of Champagne, an in-room movie night with snacks, or free breakfast for two. Package rates start at $310 in winter and $410 in summer. With the upgrade and the extras, it’s a $125 value over the best available rate. This deal is available through the end of 2010 and must be booked by phone.
For special savings on rack rates through March 31, 2010, guests can call for reservations and mention the Celebration Rate. Depending on occupancy, this deal can grant 10-30 percent off the hotel’s best available rates. If the hotel is already mostly full the discount isn’t guaranteed, but the farther in advance you book the better the rate you’re likely to get.
Since XV Beacon officially opened January 1, 2000, the hotel also has a special package for New Year’s Eve revelers. If you don’t already have plans, this deal features a one-night stay in a basic room, a private evening reception, special rooftop viewing of the New Year’s fireworks, and a 1999 bottle of Taittinger Prelude Champagne. To help with the morning after, XV Beacon is throwing in breakfast for two at Mooo and late checkout. The special starts at $410. Want to extend your stay? Prices drop for each consecutive night you book, so the second night is $310, the third $210, and the fourth $110. Book this package online or by phone.
