Three New Greek Island Travel Tips

by  Jim Sherman | Aug 16, 2011

I've posted before about the Greek islands, but I'm always looking to pass along new tips and advice on these ever-changing isles. A few bits of wisdom I’ve accumulated recently:

Visit Folegandros: I met locals who suggested a trip to Folegandros, an undeveloped, very beautiful island that draws in-the-know travelers. I suggest spending a few quiet days here before heading to livelier Mykonos or Santorini.

Moderate Mykonos: On Mykonos, a great moderate hotel to consider is the Zorzis Hotel. It’s a solid choice for in-town lodging, and rates start at about $102 in late August and early September. Outside of town, I suggest staying on Ornos Bay, which has several options (note that it’s a 10-minute taxi ride to town).

Top-Notch Restaurants: I found two new stand-out Mykonos eateries that should be on anyone’s list: Kalita, for Greek food, and Catari, for Italian cuisine. Both are set in lovely, open-air, tree-shaded courtyards; the staff at both are friendly, the food is excellent (in an island awash in just fair food), and the atmospheres are relaxed.
