Expert Review

From the open-air cliff-top lobby to the uber-romantic restaurant with tables perched on the cliff's rocky face, Esperanza is an overall show-stopper. It's equally large on style and privacy - a plus for the roster of A-list regulars. Behind the gated entrance is a Mediterranean-style haven overlooking a dramatic bluff. Oversized suites and casitas are decked out with Frette linens, iPod docking stations, bathrooms with cavernous soaking tubs and showers built for two. Even bottom-floor rooms have views of the ocean, and all 50 units have glass doors that open onto big terraces or balconies, most with built-in couches as well as hammocks; in peak season (December through March) you'll spot breeching whales with your in-room telescope. Room décor is simple with wicker seating areas and big, insanely comfortable beds. Top floor rooms have palapa roofs. The three-story buildings are all angled to provide privacy. Since the waters aren't swimmable due to strong undertows, Esperanza has a pampered pool culture. Scope out your spot for the day and an attendant will immediately offer a free bucket of ice and water, pass out refreshing fruit sorbets, chilled towels, and even dole out foot massages. The spa here is water-themed. Waiting rooms have ponds with massaging waterfalls and steam-rooms tucked away in a rock grotto. There's a big after-treatment waiting area under a palapa roof. In addition to the restaurant there's a gourmet deli off the lobby.
