Viking Sky Review

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

Viking Ocean Cruises’ third oceangoing ship doesn’t tinker with the line’s magic formula for success. Instead, the 930-guest Viking Sky offers the same great features found aboard sister ships Viking Star and Viking Sea, including the infinity pool and Scandinavian spa. In fact, you can book a sailing on any of Viking’s Star-Class ships — there are nine in total with the others being Viking Jupiter, Viking Mars, Viking Neptune, Viking Orion, Viking Saturn, and Viking Venus — and they’re all virtually identical. The spacious ship is hard not to fall in love with, especially with its complimentary Wi-Fi, shore excursions, and mealtime beverages (including beer, wine, and soft drinks). Just expect your fellow passengers to be on the older side (generally age 55-plus) and the nightlife to consist of engaging conversation rather than razzle-dazzle entertainment.

What We Love

Local Cuisine: Chefs use local ingredients to incorporate regional flavors on board, and you can find authentic Norwegian dishes served up day and night in Mamsen’s.

LivNordic Spa: This sumptuous spa offers a complimentary Nordic bathing experience that includes saunas, a cold shower, and even a snow room.

A Floating Library: Like her sisters, Viking Sky is lined with books. Expect interesting titles on polar exploration, Norwegian explorers, biographies of influential artists and writers, and — of course — books on travel and maritime history.

Best Known For

Scandinavian Style: With its light, airy spaces and blond wood, this ship (and its siblings) has a look and feel that's entirely unique among the cruise industry. And with floor-to-ceiling windows in every public room and an abundance of attention to detail, you may just catch yourself saying, “This is how cruising should be!”

Convivial Atmosphere: Interesting lectures take the place of humming casinos, and nightly music is offered throughout the ship. There’s a complete lack of Vegas glitz here, and that’s just how Viking’s guests like it.

Who It's Best For

World Travelers: If you’re curious about the world and love the idea of cruising on a ship with a calm, classy, educational vibe, Viking Sky will be the perfect fit.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Kids Aren't Allowed: You must be 18 years old to sail, so there are no kids facilities or children’s programs offered.
