Although many countries require U.S. travelers to acquire a visa, American passport holders can visit more than 150 destinations without one. Some places, like the U.K., require a visa waiver, which is typically known as an ETA (electronic travel authorization) and is not to be confused with an actual visa. But in general, Americans have a lot of freedom when planning overseas travel, whether in Europe, Asia, or closer to home in North and South America. That said, it's important to do your due diligence ahead of time and check each country's entry requirements, especially if you plan to stay for longer periods.
