Expert Review

Robert De Niro launched his 88-room destination in his beloved TriBeCa in April 2008 with little fanfare. That understated approach matches the atmosphere of relaxed luxury in the serene lobby (adorned with expressionistic paintings by the actor’s father), set adjacent to a lush Tuscan-style courtyard. A guest might have the sense of visiting a friend’s rustic but elegant villa. You know, the one where the giant subterranean spa boasts a pool and a transplanted 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse? No two rooms are alike, but all have primo Dux beds, hand-loomed Tibetan silk rugs, and oak floors. Hudson River views and a lantern-lit swimming pool, two rarities in New York hotels, make the prices easier to swallow.
