Since the ‘60s, the Spanish island of Ibiza (or Eivissa as it’s known in the local Catalan dialect) has been attracting the hip and the trendy, from flower children dancing beneath the stars and sleeping on the beaches to the young elite of London, Berlin, and Milan mobbing the top discos and staying at chic, boutique hotels.
For the beaches, trendy hotspots, and non-stop parties.
There’s certainly not a lack of hotels here, from humble no-star to super five-star properties. Most accommodations in the three- to four-star category cater to hoards of British and German package tourists (arriving between July and August without reservations is not wise). On the high-end, expect rates of $400+ per night for rooms; budget properties can be found for $150 and under nightly. Most hotels in the resort areas of the north are open only from May to October. Partiers should book properties in the west, where nightlife reigns supreme, while those seeking a quieter escape should consider the southwest region and the relaxed, offshore island of Formentera. In the past five years, a number of artsy, boutique hotels have opened across the island providing an alternative to the madness of the larger resorts.

With one million visitors a year, Ibiza has developed a culinary scene to suit a variety of budgets and tastes, with simple pizzerias and pubs just as easy to come by as five-fork, luxury dining. The island’s hippie past (and present) means vegetarian and organic eateries are popular. Everyone should try the rich, traditional, rice-and-seafood casserole known as paella. Word to the wise: many restaurants close shop during the off season.
