Hotel des Arts
Address: 447 Bush St.
Neighborhood: French Quarter
City: San Francisco
While the amenities aren’t the most lavish in town – some rooms have shared bathrooms – Hotel des Arts stays filled to capacity thanks to its pretty paintings alone: Emerging artists have decorated the walls with fantastic, splashy murals. Art-lovers can call ahead and request a room with a specific artist’s work (Room 208 is a favorite for Jet Martinez’s mystical night sky murals with glittery, gold accents). Breakfast and wireless access are free, and many rooms even have microwaves and refrigerators, though quarters are pretty cramped, especially by San Francisco standards. You also won’t find a better price (rooms start at $139/night during peak season) for the location at the meeting point of Union Square, the Financial District, and Chinatown.

Consider booking seats at the back of the plane since you’ll usually board first and have first dibs on luggage space.
