To the north and west, all within 90 minutes by car from Palm Beach, are unspoiled nature sanctuaries and the country's oldest drive-through safari park. Along the coast to the south, less than a two-hour drive away, urbanites will find big-city thrills in Miami.

Day Trips from Palm Beach

Fort Lauderdale

No longer a spring break capital, laid-back Lauderdale has family-friendly beaches, a sizable neighborhood of gay businesses, and Sawgrass Mills, one of the world's largest outlet malls. Go for the non-society setting and an added dose of urban accoutrements.

Lion Country Safari

When it opened in 1967, Lion Country Safari was the first-drive through safari park in the United States. Still a top draw, the park's four-mile loop takes vehicles – no convertibles! – past white rhinos, zebras, lions, giraffes, wildebeest, and hundreds of other jungle animals. The adjacent Safari World amusement park has rides, shops, reptile displays, and giraffe feeding.

Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

The northernmost section of the Everglades and a 400-acre cypress swamp share this protected area, home to American alligators and up to 257 different bird species. Walking trails, a canoe path, a boardwalk, boat ramp, and a bike trail provide close-ups with the wetlands.

McKee Botanical Garden

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, McKee Botanical Garden is an 18-acre subtropical jungle at the edge of Vero Beach. Highlights include a palm grove, a bamboo pavilion with roof thatched by local Seminole Indians, and rotating exhibitions. Good for a quiet walk.

Miami

A sultry counterpoint to Palm Beach's polo-and-Bermudas vibe, Miami delivers the big city experience with an anything-goes mentality and heaps of Latin flavor. Go for the Art Deco architecture of South Beach, the cutting-edge art collections in the Wynwood district and, of course, the parade of beautiful people.
