It’s all about timing. To avoid crowds and inflated prices, we recommend the period between high and low seasons when the weather is fine, places are still open and happy to welcome travelers, and you can explore a destination at your own pace. ShermansTravel experts call this magical time and space continuum the Sweet Spot.

When to go to Portland

Peak Season: May to October

Hotels are packed, so plan in advance. Due to sunny days that never get too scorching (the average high in July and August is in the low 80s), this is a popular time for outdoors types.

Off Season: December to February

Best hotel and restaurant deals, but since Oregonians are used to the rain there’s still plenty to do indoors; you’ll experience a side of this city most tourists miss.

Sweet Spot: March to April; November

Crowds are thin due to rain, but if the weather warms up early you can explore every side of Portland in March and April; fortunately, hotels generally offer low-season rates, making it more appealing to folks on a budget.
