5 Cool Activities on Anthem of the Seas

by Sherri Eisenberg

Royal Caribbean’s long-awaited Quantum of the Seas, the first in the line’s new Quantum class of ships, moved to Shanghai in the spring to serve the China market. Fortunately, cruisers who want to experience her much-touted onboard activities can do so on her identical sister, Anthem of the Seas, which launched in April in the U.K. and moves to New York City this week to do Caribbean sailings. Here, five things that make this ship so much fun:

RipCord by iFly on the Anthem of the Seas / Royal Caribbean International
RipCord by iFly

1. You can learn to skydive.

The RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator allows you to take a short class, then hop into a wind-tunnel tube and, you know, see if you can fly.

The Verdict: This class is worth the time if for nothing else than a selfie in the outfit — picture a flight suit, helmet, and goggles. You also get earplugs — it sounds like an engine in there, and that’s on top of your screams. The (free!) class is a little more than an hour long, but you only get a minute suspended in air. Still, for first timers, it’s such a strange sensation that 60 seconds can feel like a long, long time.

Bumper cars

2. You can slam around in bumper cars.

The sports complex on this ship includes one cool new feature that everyone has been talking about: bumper cars.

The Verdict: There may be no better way to relieve tension with travel mates, whether they’re friends or family, than by trying to run them off “the road.” Plus, the space is also home to a hot dog “food truck” (it doesn’t actually move, but it’s a nice idea) and, at night, roller-skating parties with a proper DJ.

FlowRider

3. You can give surfing a try.

This ship has a surfing simulator, which means, when the weather is warm enough, you can don a wetsuit and see just how long you can stay upright.

The Verdict: Surfing is hard. Really hard. But if you do yoga at home, you will find that all that balance training can pay off when you’re trying to ride a wave.

North Star pod

4. You can soar 300 feet over the ship.

The North Star pod sits at the end of a mechanical arm that extends, a bit like an amusement park ride, 300 feet above the ship and then out over the sea.

The Verdict: The ride isn’t fast nor does it include drops, so it’s more about the views than thrills or chills, but (again) the selfies alone are certainly worth the time waiting in line.

Bionic Bar

5. You can order your drinks from a robot.

The Bionic Bar by Makr Shakr has two robot bartenders that can make a number of cocktails. Pick up an iPad and type in your request, then watch as the robot whips up your concoction.

The Verdict: It’s a fun novelty, but the crowds are — not surprisingly — large, and the waits for drinks can be long. Plus, there are so many comfortable lounges onboard that this small space pales in comparison. Still, you should wander by and watch a cocktail being shaken up at least once — on your way somewhere else.
