A ship christening is a seafaring tradition that has stood the test of time. New vessels have been launched with a blessing and a celebration for thousands of years — superstitious sailers believe that a ship not properly christened is unlucky. Today, the biggest ocean liners are still welcomed with fanfare and elaborate festivities. In keeping with nautical customs, christening ceremonies feature cocktails and a dinner, religious blessings, a Champagne sacrifice, and a celebration, all to wish good fortune and safe passage for the ship’s future voyages.
The cruise world’s newest vessel, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer, was welcomed with its own celebration in mid-July in Monte Carlo. It was a glamorous night under crystal clear Côte d’Azur skies as Regent Seven Seas Cruises christened its fourth vessel. The glitz and glam of the ceremony and party were fitting for a ship that the line touts as the most luxurious cruise ship ever built. Explorer’s godmother, Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco, blessed the vessel, Regent’s first new build in 13 years. Guests were also treated to a cocktail hour, a five-course dinner onboard, and a concert by famed Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.
