Fees for Passports and Visa Pages Spike Tomorrow

Hurry, check your passport! If the expiration date is sometime soon, you might want to hightail it to the nearest post office today and apply for a new one. Effective July 13, U.S. passport fees will jump from $100 to $135 for first-time adult applicants, $85 to $105 for kids younger than 16, and $75 to $110 for adult renewals.  The hike follows a 2009 State Department study that evaluated how much it actually costs to administer passport services around the world, and unfortunately for frequent border hoppers, the survey also determined that adding visa pages is quite the consular expense. Extra sheets, which used to be free, will now cost $82 – just $28 less than a brand new passport.
