Guy Harvey Talks About His Biggest Canvas: Norwegian Escape

by  Kristen Boatright | Dec 16, 2015

Passengers and passersby can’t miss the brightly colored, massive sailfish when they happen upon Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, which launched in November in Miami. At 1,098 feet, the expansive canvas of Norwegian Escape is the largest ever for famed Marine Painter and Conservationist Guy Harvey. It also features stingrays, turtles, frigate birds, coral fish, parrot fish, butterfly fish, angelfish, and a whale shark.

Harvey says planning for the project began about two years ago. Painting took teams at Meyer Werft shipyard in northern Germany about three months to complete. The intricately detailed artwork was laser projected onto the hull, penciled in by hand, and then roller-painted.

“What I am trying to remind the onlooker is about the variety of different marine life, not only here in south Florida, but the rest of the Caribbean … to remind people of what is beneath this beautiful, calm, glassy surface," says Harvey. "There is a whole new realm, a new world under there of marine life that we kind of forget about and we need to take much better care of and pay more attention to.”

His work will also be available for sale through the ship’s onboard art gallery, Park West Gallery.
