Spending a whole night stargazing sounds nice at first – until it gets cold, or the bugs come out. But, book a night in the Igloo Village in Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland and you can actually have a satisfying (and sheltered) night of watching the heavens. The village offers igloos made of thermal glass, the latter of which allows the temperature of the enclosed space to stay in a comfortable range and prevents frost from building up on the outside. (In winter, temperatures in this part of Finland can fall to around -4 degrees Fahrenheit.)

When to go: The Igloo Village is open every year from December or January through the end of April. If you wish to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, we suggest you go in late April. The phenomenon is only visible at this time and in late August. If you choose to go then, make sure you reserve one of the futuristic glass igloos to admire the stars from the comfort of your bed. Rates start at 170 euros per person, per night (about $220).

What to do: While exploring the winter wonderland, the village has a range of unique recreational activities: Dine in a snow restaurant; observe works of art in the Ice Gallery. If you're looking for more outdoor adventures, try a husky or reindeer safari, ice-fishing trips, snowmobile rentals, or just hit the Saariselkä slopes (just over six miles from the igloos). Buses travel regularly between the hotel and the slopes.
