Tourists during London’s 2012 Olympic Games will get to glide nearly 300 feet above the River Thames if construction on the city’s new cable car goes as planned.
The city’s mayor, Boris Johnson, announced Monday that construction workers will break ground this summer on an airborne, 34-gondola car connecting the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks on the northern end of the Thames, reports CNN.
The project – the first of its kind in the UK – is on track to finish just in time for the 2012 opening ceremonies in July, and is being handled by Mace construction, the same company that built the city’s striking London Eye Ferris wheel.
