COQ Hôtel Paris

by  Laura Motta | Apr 12, 2017

Helping you find the best value lodging experiences around the world, from budget to luxury and everything in between.

Paris’s hotel scene is nothing if not varied. You can stay in a 5-star suite at the Ritz, or a cozy Montmartre apartment, or a houseboat on the Seine, and each experience would exemplify, in different ways, a distinct part of the Parisian experience. Our latest excursion to Paris brought us to a newish boutique hotel called C.O.Q. -- that’s “Community of Quality” to the uninitiated -- which delivers major French style without a lot of fuss, or cost. Here’s a closer look.

The Basics

Budget Level: Value (under $150/night)

Lodging Type: Small Hotel (under 50 rooms)

What You Need to Know

The Look

Never mind the gilded opulence that you’ll see at L’Opera. C.O.Q. Hotel’s signature is midcentury modern meets the greenhouse. Its sunroom-style lobby is filled with plants, oversize couches, a fireplace, and a stack of board games and coffee table books. Minimalist rooms are done in dark colors with sunny accents, and upper floor rooms have oh-so-Parisian double windows that overlook the city’s rooftops.

The Vibe

C.O.Q. Hotel is a haven for the young and in-the-know, and its common areas are never without a few people — guests and locals — hunched over laptops and drinking coffee. Despite the meticulous attention paid to the hotel’s aesthetic, service is unfussy bordering on nonexistent, but the ever-present front desk attendants foster a friendly vibe.

Who Will Love It

Those who are looking for a heady dose of style along with an ultra-affordable room can’t go wrong here.

Who Might Not

If you need careful, attentive, or highly visible service, this is not your scene. Guests are asked to drop their bags in the luggage room themselves, and there’s almost never more than one person at the front desk.

Best Amenity

The lobby. This welcoming, secluded space is the ideal backdrop for checking email, reading a book, or playing a game of Scrabble. A close second is the lobby’s restaurant, which serves drinks and snacks around the clock. When we stayed, the menu included a creamy and satisfying sweet potato soup, along with a selection of cheese and charcuterie plates.

Money Matters

What’s Included

The price includes only the room. Food and drinks in the lobby cost extra, but you’ll find wifi, coffee, and unlimited bottles of filtered water in your room at no extra charge.

Fees and Extra Costs You Should Know About

You’ll pay about two euros per night in local taxes.

How to Get a Deal

C.O.Q. Hotel’s web site lists deals and packages, and the best rates are available for those who book well in advance, and pay up front, and in full. One current promotion lets you save 10% off your stay with the code COCORICO. As with any Paris hotel, prices rise significantly in summer.

Getting There

In the Neighborhood

C.O.Q. Hotel is located on a quiet street near the Place d’Italie, in Paris’s 13th arrondissement. This area is home to as many modern structures as elegant turn-of-the-century buildings, and is considered one of the city’s up-and-coming neighborhoods.

Nearest Airport

The hotel is surprisingly easy to reach from Charles de Gaulle Airport. Take the RER B train to the Denfert-Rochereau stop and then make an easy switch to the 6 metro, which is one stop from Place d’Italie.

Nearest Public Transit

The best thing about the hotel’s location is its proximity to the 5, 6, and 7 metro lines, which are just a few steps away. From here, you can reach the most central parts of Paris — the area around the Louvre and Notre Dame cathedral — in about 15-20 minutes.

The Bottom Line

For an of-the-moment, affordable stay in a fresh new area of Paris, nothing beats C.O.Q Hotel.
