We Tried It! Disney Cruise Line’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

We Tried It!

For years, the hottest seat on Disney Cruise Line ships has been a table for two in the hard-to-get 7 pm slot at Remy, the fabulous French adults-only restaurant. A close second is a coveted cabana on Castaway Cay, the line’s private island. (These sell out weeks before most sailings.) But now there’s a third enviable booking: A predinner appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Disney’s beauty parlor for kids, which opened at the end of October 2015 on Disney Dream.

The royal treatment

Upgrade to the Castle Package ($194.95), and your princess-in-training receives a costume and accessories (including a crown and a wand), plus a special invitation sent to her cabin with a glass slipper. If you’re not upgrading, you will probably want to have your “princess” arrive already in costume, with her own tiara and other accessories in tow.

A princess and her fairy godmothers

She'll have her own fairy godmother

So what else makes this salon different from any other? The tasteful little space is designed just for little ones, with chairs that prop them high in the air. And the stylists are appropriately called Fairy Godmothers. As the girls sit wide-eyed in attention, these kind women tell stories of those who sat in the chair before them (“Ariel was just here yesterday...”). They are sweet and gentle to the little ones, and they never stray from the fantasy.

The look of choice at this salon is either a tight bun with a tiara or a colored hair extension teased out into a fan of, say, pale pink flamingo-style fluff. On top of that, hair is lacquered with gel and topped with a large amount of glitter. It’s a little bit punk rock, and a little bit costume ball. For some families, it may be a little bit too much.

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to select this over-the-top look for your princess. Instead, ask for a tasteful “Elsa” braid or some other Disney Princess-inspired hairdo and they will happily comply. You can opt out of the glitter, too, which takes days to wash out but is certainly fun for the princess. She is asked to hold a clear plastic shield in front of her face while her Fairy Godmother shakes the glitter out of a star-capped wand as if by magic. The words she chants? “Bibbidi bobbidi boo,” of course!
