Expert Review

The white hacienda-style buildings at this resort are elegant and simple, but the 71 rooms are downright extravagant, complete with extras like telescopes (for nightly stargazing), fireplaces, and balconies with built-in banquettes (some even have Jacuzzis). The bathrooms are enormous, with big soaking tubs and rejuvenating bath salts. And with a four-to-one staff-to-guest ratio, service is unobtrusive and first-rate. The on-site restaurant sees chef Fabrice Guisset prepare six different variations of ceviche dishes daily, as well as seared red snapper with ratatouille.

In addition to the more formal restaurant there's a beachfront grill and on the upper lobby level there's a fantastic ceviche and tequila bar. Service around the pool is delightful and includes cool towels, misting sprays, and water or juice, on the house. The desert-themed spa has an open-air relaxation area surrounded by cactus gardens that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and the treatment rooms include walled open-air showers. Relax in the Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, cruise around Baja in the hotel's convertible Mini Cooper, or ask the resort's "Department of Romance" to cook up a sexy picnic on the beach. All in all, this is a spectacular resort that makes repeat guests out of celebrities and luminaries alike. 2008 Smart Luxury Award winner
