Oaxaca — Although one of Mexico’s poorest states, Oaxaca is rich in art and history. The region is also fiercely proud of its Zapotec and Mixtec heritages. The city of Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s colonial gems, surrounded by awe-inspiring ruins and villages specializing in the folk art for which Oaxaca is renowned. The (mostly) untouched coastline was immortalized in the movie Y Tu Mama También. Hualtulco has the coast’s only five-star resorts.
