Expert Review

Offering a quintessentially English experience just off of Green Park in the heart of central London, the Stafford welcomes visitors with its elegant, modern take on traditional chintz, fires in the hearths, and friendly, spot-on service. Built into what was once the sprawling private home of Princess Diana’s ancestors, it’s operated as a hotel since 1912 and offers a secluded bit of respite from the city – and we do mean secluded. You might want to check a map, or have your phone handy, before trying to navigate back on foot after a day of sightseeing. Behind the main building, a row of royal stables has been converted into country-chic mews suites that harken back to their equestrian origins via the original wood-beam ceilings and split stable doors.

Ask any of the hotel staff to give you a tour of the hotel’s high-vaulted wine cellar, which has been in use for 380 years and features an ever-rotating selection courtesy of an on-site Master Sommelier. Tastings and pairings are offered for small groups, and any of the wines are available in the property’s grandly appointed restaurant. Also in the cellar – mementoes and artifacts from when the tunnels were used as bomb shelters during World War II for the British and American soldiers who were quartered on property. More gifts and souvenirs from the hotels many American patrons deck out the hotel’s easygoing American Bar, which offers outdoor seating.
