Expert Review

This larger-than-life property beckons trendsetters, fashionistas, and celebrities galore with glamorous digs nestled in the Theater District, just two blocks from Union Square. The Clift blends contemporary style with surrealist magic – thanks to designer Philippe Starck. The lobby's soaring ceilings, contrasting colors, and extra-large furniture (of the sort you'd expect to find in a giant's lair) exude an out-of-this-world vibe. The hotel's famous Redwood Room bar is a trendy hangout and blends the traditional with the ultra modern. Original redwood paneling and massive bar – carved out of one giant redwood tree – are offset by chic, contemporary furniture and digital artwork. The Clift's 363 guest rooms are in sharp contrast to the over-the-top lobby and public spaces. Instead of fanciful, over-the-top décor, the rooms all share a simple design of light and airy colors. Although on the small side, monochromatic units have a soothing feel with luxurious fabrics, blond-wood furnishings, translucent orange acrylic nightstands, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and many with great views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge.
