Expert Review

This Upper West Side mainstay opened in the 1890s, so it’s not exactly new. But with a radical basement-to-roof renovation (completed in June 2008) – and a location across from Lincoln Center and half a block from Central Park – the 420-room hotel has refreshed its appeal. A modern color palette of ochre and dark mahogany has replaced faded florals, with faux crocodile- and zebra-print accents adding splashes of chic. The stunning rooftop lounge especially entices visitors with uninterrupted city views and a lovely pool (for guest-only access). Some standard rooms are small, so consider splurging on a corner suite.
