Expert Review

Boutique hotel kingpin Ian Schrager is the mastermind behind the 185-room Gramercy Park Hotel, where guests receive an exclusive key to Manhattan’s oh-so-private Gramercy Park next door. Artist Julian Schnabel shaped the hotel’s contemporary interior, which features art exhibits from guest curators, with works from the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst. After dinner at the hotel’s David Rockwell-designed Italian trattoria, Maialino (opened December 2009), sip swanky cocktails at the exclusive, celebrity-riddled Rose Bar or on the private roof deck – it’s reserved for guests and members only and touts a bird’s-eye view of the park. The rooms aren’t cheap, but privileged use of the key is invaluable.
