Expert Review

In an area where most hotels offer a soulless in-and-out experience for business folk, Hyatt 48 Lex (opened October 2011) sets the bar higher with its intimate vibe, hand-curated art collection, and focus on local flavor. A stone’s throw from Midtown’s iconic destinations, its 116 spacious studios and suites come with a warm gray color palette, woven carpets, and tables made by a Brooklyn woodworker. The in-room vibe is homey yet upscale – there are even kitchenettes with pantries stocked with local treats, like Jacques Torres Chocolate Covered Marshmallows and North Fork Potato Chips. The downstairs lobby is a small pass-through space but the second-floor Lexicon Lounge does a great job as a stand-in. It offers complimentary homemade snacks and beverages from 6am to midnight – a great-value perk – and hosts evening wine receptions. No need to leave the premises for fine food – the ground-floor bistro, Lexington Brass, serves up reinvented American fare. Highlights from the (additional charge) breakfast menu include jam-filled pancakes with berries and lemon cream and a Spanish scramble with chorizo, rock shrimp, and hash.
